Wash and Dry

March 4, 2014 By Gail 1 Comment

Is there anything as pathetic and vulnerable looking as a soaking wet cat? I think not. And, is there anything as curious about, well, everything, as a kitten? I think not. Water + kitten + curiosity = NOT a good combination.

Of late, whenever I take a bath, our kitten Giese comes to the ledge of the tub and watches. Sometimes she tilts her head this way and that as if trying to decide if I’m insane, or if splashing around in warm water is potentially a good thing. Sometimes she waves a paw in the air as if that will tell her something important. And, sometimes, she gets bored and walks out of the room.

Well, today things went awry. Giese was up on the ledge as her eyes blackened with intensity. On the inside of the tub wall a very slight outcropping exists; essentially a decorative touch of sorts. Giese kept her back feet on the upper ledge and tentatively put a front paw on the tiny ledge. Her other paw reached towards the water. I saw her do it and pushed her back to the top.

“Don’t even think about it little girl,” I said. “You don’t want to join me.”

She tried a couple more times and then skirted the tub in favor of the window. I forgot about her until I heard the SPA-LOOSH. Behind me, flailing and panicked, Giese was treading bathwater.

I scooped her out of the sudsy quicksand, but I couldn’t hold on to her and get my legs beneath me. Without much choice, I put her on the bathroom rug and let go. She tore out of the bathroom like a slipping, sliding, terrified hairy skeleton. I felt horrible.

As soon as I got a robe on I went after her. The wet trail through the house wasn’t exactly hard to follow. She was cowering beneath a chair, so I pulled her close and started toweling her off. She didn’t fight much, but I still felt a need to reassure her. Between the two of us…me drying with a towel and Giese licking as fast as she could…we got her fairly back to fluffy.

Pudgy watched. If cats can smile, she was. I know she was thinking, “Idiot kitten.” Idiot or not, I was rather touched that Giese wanted to experience my bath so bad she couldn’t resist diving in. I was even more touched she trusted me to get her dried off before she shivered to death. Kittens + Curiosity + Trust = the best part of my day.
