To Air Is Human

August 11, 2011 By Gail 34 Comments

This morning I was reading a Newsweek article about China’s plan to take advantage of the United States’ apathy in job creation. The statement that left me wondering the most was, “China, for instance, clearly has every intention of leading the world in job creation in the clean-energy sector, pleased that we are a sleeping giant.” -America’s Workers Get Stiffed Again by Jennifer M. Granholm and Daniel G. Mulhern.
I am no expert on any of this stuff, but I can tell you what I saw while recently in China. People were working extremely hard on their infrastructure. New roads and buildings are rising like a cement tide. But here’s the troubling part, the air was often so dark with smog you couldn’t see the tops of buildings. Many of the citizens in both Tibet and China were wearing face masks as part of their daily outfit. My friend Khandro bought a stack of face masks that had a lace design over the paper mesh. She wanted to look pretty if half her face had to strain out air pollution. She was concerned that I wasn’t wearing a mask. “You’ll get sick,” she said gravely. I was told if it started to rain in the city of Chengdu to duck into a building. While the rain would clean the air for awhile, the black “stuff” that fell would stain clothing and require taking a hot soapy shower for the unlucky person caught in a sudden downpour.
There is no question we need to step it up as a country. Our innovations and work ethic made us who we are, but somewhere along the way we’ve lost sight of our strengths. Maybe China is leading the clean-energy sector, but they have a long way to go to clean up their own environmental contamination. To say otherwise is a bit of a dirty lie.

Alas. I’m sorry that I’ve lost your attention. I do try my best and one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned… as I age… is that no matter how hard I try I will never please everyone. With that in mind I work on accepting that I am enough as I am. Thank you for reminding to be at peace with myself, and thanks for your comments.

I am impressed, I must say. Really rarely do I see a blog that’s both informative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you’ve hit the nail on the head. Your idea is outstanding; the issue is something that not a lot of people are talking intelligently about. I am really happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to this.

Nice read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing some research on that. And he just bought me lunch because I found it for him smile Therefore let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch! “England and America are two countries separated by the same language.” by George Bernard Shaw.

      Hi Kim,
Yes, I believe Lauren put me on WordPress. What else she does remains a total and complete mystery to me, but I trust her. I went through Lauren because I’m clueless when it comes to technology. If I can write and post my photographs, I’ll leave the techie stuff to those who do it so well. If you would like to ask her directly you can contact her at http://www.mytcs.net. Thanks for visiting!

      Hi Christina,
Again, I’m not tech-minded. However, I use Hostway and WordPress. With help from my tech friends, life has been good. Thanks for stopping in for a look-see.
