Midlife and Getting Lucky in 2016…Lucky Bamboo That Is!

December 30, 2015 By Gail Leave a Comment

She drifted over to my booth like a gentle breeze on an otherwise blustery day. “I want to buy one of your scarves,” she said. “I’ve walked around to the other vendors and believe yours are the best quality and style.” I was flattered, of course.

Anita Regina Scepurek is a veteran artist and vendor. Her current media is fused glass, which she is taking to ever-higher artistic levels. Hearing her approval of my scarves was validating, and I absorbed the compliment like a dry sponge landing in a big ‘ol puddle of praise.

Later in the morning, I found her booth and we chatted about the ups and downs of life as an artist. Starting my art venture in midlife means I have a lot of questions.  Lucky for me Anita had a lot of answers.  After oohing and ahhing over her fused glass art, I selected a vase with three stems of bamboo sprouting upwards.

“This is gorgeous,” I said. The fused glass was clear with embedded black streamers and green and white confetti. It reminded me of a handkerchief—if a handkerchief could be made from glass—that had been folded upwards into a joyous jagged vessel.

“That is lucky bamboo,” Anita said. “It represents happiness, health, and wealth.”

“Is bamboo hard to care for?” I asked. “My office doesn’t get the best of light.” I left out the part about two cats that love to nibble to death anything I expressly tell them to leave alone.

“No, it is a trouble-free plant.”

“Then I must have it! My life and office NEEDS health, wealth, and happiness.”

When I arrived home and had placed the bamboo and vase on my desk, I became curious about the lore of “lucky bamboo.”   Here are few excerpts I found on the website.

Ms. Painter has the meaning for the number of stalks listed from one to ten, and then at twenty-one, but I am sharing the symbolic meaning for three bamboos since that is what is bringing energy to me this year!

Lucky Bamboo Meaning

By Sally Painter

Feng Shui Practitioner

The meaning of lucky bamboo plays an important role as a living example of the feng shui elements of water, wood, and earth. When you place this plant in the correct pot, it can introduce fire and metal to complete a balance of the five elements. This plant is one of the most recognizable and popular feng shui cures. It’s an easy care plant that can survive in any kind of light. Feng shui principles claim that bamboo attracts auspicious chi energy. Since the bamboo plant is strong, it can energize your home.

Three Bamboo Stalks

The plant of three bamboo stalks is one of the most favorite number combinations to have in your home. It brings three kinds of luck to you:

  • Happiness: Fu
  • Long Life: Soh
  • Wealth: Lu (Career promotions)

Creating Harmony In Your Home

The convicted Bamboo Nibbler

You can use lucky bamboo to help you achieve harmony in your home. Use the meanings for the number of stalks to ensure you select the best plant for your need. Never place plants in a bedroom, even if it’s a lucky bamboo. This creates too much yang energy and will have an inauspicious effect. One of the best locations to place a lucky bamboo plant is in the east or south sector of your home or office.

I am excited to have this beautiful piece of art in my home. Having the lucky bamboo thriving within is just a crazy-happy bonus. So far only one of our cats has tried to eat part of a leaf.

How about you? What items bring life and joy to your home? Why do you feel that way? I would love to hear about it! Please share below.
