Today my son turned thirty one years old. We made plans to meet for lunch and conversation. I’m proud to say we have always had a strong relationship and open communication, and I never take for granted how special that is in a world of dysfunctional families.
As I thought about that moment thirty one years ago when he came screaming from my womb, I felt very emotional. It occurred to me that no single event had so profoundly changed my life…before…or after. When the nurse put him in my arms for the first time, I suddenly felt a surge of protectiveness and responsibility I had never known. It was overwhelming, and it was anchoring. My role as a mom was being defined with each of his newborn breaths. When his sister came along four years later she created her own music in my heart, but there is something about the firstborn that orchestrates what is to follow.
As I hugged my son and realized yet again what a fine person he is, well, it was the best part of my day.
